Phillip Donnelly (17) got off to a
flying start in the City of Derry Building Society sponsored open stroke
at Prehen on Saturday. A record seven stroke-winning margin resulted
from his superb 62 nett. Phillip opened his account with two fine pars
at the first and second, powerful golf especially from the white sticks
and then he woke up to record back to back double bogeys at the next two
holes. Then the fireworks started and he proceeded to play the remaining
14 holes in five over gross, a truly great round on a far from perfect
day. Alan Heaney (11) was steadiness personified in compiling a fine 69
nett and second place from Ken Quigley (18) on a tiebreak. Alan only
recently discovered metal drivers and now the world is his oyster. Ernie
Heywood (scr) was best of the low men yet again with a 69. Joe Brown
(13) from Letterkenny took the visitors prize. John Hancock (10) had to
be content with the front nine prize, only dropping one shot to par, a
fabulous two at the first getting him off to a great start but he
faltered on the home stretch. Gerry Cunningham (16) was best on the back
nine with 32 nett. |
