Morren Closes the Gap!
Receptive
greens, the odd shower and injury have allowed Gavin
Morren (14) to close the gap on Sunday Society Golfer of
the Year leader, Clive Brolly, to a mere two points after
the fifteenth outing of the most popular winter society at
City of Derry Golf Club. Following on from his steady play
on Saturday Gavin showed his true form with a
sparkling 41 points for the sixteen competition holes to
claim first place and a massive 14 GOY points. Meantime
leader Clive Brolly could only muster a mere four points as
he struggled with a severe shoulder injury. Morren now looks
like the clear favourite to overhaul the Sunday Society’s
most consistent performer of recent years and with several
weeks remaining in the competition he has emerged as a new
bookie’s favourite to take the coveted title. Ken McBride
(12) grabbed second place on Sunday with 40 points after
very steady play. Gary Leckey(10) put aside the cares
of training for the impending Spanish trips to post the best
of three 38 point tallies and took third spot. Martin
Duddy(18) was on the wrong side of that break of tie
with an inferior back nine and had to be content with fourth
spot. He in turn bested John Flynn (12) over the
closing nine to relegate his 38 points to fifth place. For
the second week in a row Graham Hepburn finished in
the winner’s circle with a fine 37 point tally to take sixth
place.
