Alan Philson (8) a former golfer of the year and a past winner of the Captain’s prize returned to the winners enclosure on Saturday after a lengthy absence, a superb 67 nett earning him the coveted title in the Desmond Motors sponsored Open Stroke. He finished two shots clear of long time leader in the clubhouse James Harrigan (17). James carded a vital two on the back nine giving him the edge over Eddie Leonard (18) on a tie break. Sean Quigg (2) won the best gross prize with a 73 but still hasn’t got over his team being knocked out of the European Cup earlier in the week. Gerry Redden (9) a long time member of the club but now playing out of Ballyliffin took home the visitor’s prize with a nett 71. Jack Houlahan (13) was best of the day on the front nine with 31.5 strokes and Gregory Hay (14) took the back nine on 32 nett
