Alan Philson (8) a former
golfer of the year and a past winner of the Captain’s prize returned to
the winners enclosure on Saturday after a lengthy absence, a superb 67
nett earning him the coveted title in the Desmond Motors sponsored Open
Stroke. He finished two shots clear of long time leader in the clubhouse
James Harrigan (17). James carded a vital two on the back nine giving
him the edge over Eddie Leonard (18) on a tie break. Sean Quigg (2) won
the best gross prize with a 73 but still hasn’t got over his team being
knocked out of the European Cup earlier in the week. Gerry Redden (9) a
long time member of the club but now playing out of Ballyliffin took
home the visitor’s prize with a nett 71. Jack Houlahan (13) was best of
the day on the front nine with 31.5 strokes and Gregory Hay (14) took
the back nine on 32 nett
