Superbly marshalled by the oldest category one player in Prehen the family combination of Terry Coyle (5), his brother Larry (19), his son Paul (10) and adopted son Allen Heaney were the worthy winners in this, one of the most popular team event played at Prehen. Necessarily curtailed to 27 holes due to heavy rain on the second day the winners put up a magnificent performance of 142 points, 95 on day one and 47 on day two. They were followed home in close order by the team led by scratch man Johnny Harding, Johnny Donnell (3), Jayson McIntyre (1) and Jeff Garrett (9). They were the best team on day one with 97 points including 19 birdies and an eagle. They lost out on a tie break with 45 points on day two to match the winning team’s total of 142. Tommy O Neill (13) led his team of Vinny O Callaghan (22), Alec Dunn (17) and Paul Murray (12) into third place with 139 points. The fourth overall prize went to Kevin O Doherty (15), John O Doherty (13), Tony Roche (12) and John Harkin (16) with a total of 138 points. Winners of the best first day prize were last week’s president’s prize winner Eamonn McCourt (9), Kevin Barrett (11) Sean Barrett (8) and another one of those Coyles Sean (22) of BBC Radio Foyle fame. They scored a super 94 points and looked good for an overall prize until the vagaries of weather conspired against them Second on day one were Vincent Boyle (24), Peter McMahon (24) Michael Lynch (18) and Dermot Crossan (18) on 93 points. Christine Mitchell (25), Marlene Montgomery (30), Eddie Mitchell (10) and Ortie Phillips (10) were best of the day on day two with 45 points on a tiebreak from Ron Warnock (10), James Doherty (8), David Brady (10) and Ian Stone (9). Michael Doherty of the sponsors Texaco (Bridgend) spoke at the prize giving and highly commended the young lads, Sean Devine, Kealan Quigg and Niall Morrison for their huge help in keeping the course open with their squeegees at strategic holes. |
