For the third competition
in succession, 44 points was needed to win and in Thursday’s Open at
Prehen Dermot Hutton (9) rose magnificently to the occasion and took
the honour. Dermot’s round of one over gross was the epitome of
steadiness with no less than thirteen fours. In hot pursuit with 43
points were Ron Grieve (15) and Sean Quigg (2) with Ron taking
second place on a tiebreak. Ron’s back nine of 25 points was
particularly noteworthy. Young Sean Quigg went round in five under
gross and that gives a good idea of how well he had played to get to
the second round of the “North” on the previous day. The perennially
evergreen Terry Coyle (5) also played superb golf going round in 71
blows for 41 points and fourth nett. He had three birdies and four
lip outs.
