On a glorious day for golf, a huge entry with brilliant all day sunshine Jack Logue (16) realised his greatest golfing dream at Prehen on Saturday when taking his first ever captain’s (Mr Andy Meenagh) prize and at 76 years of age he became the oldest ever winner of a major at the club. Speaking at the presentation Jack said he was the most surprised person at his long awaited success but anyone who has played with Jack recently can testify to him hitting the ball as well as ever and that, combined with his putting in great form was just what was needed to shoot a fabulous winning 42 points. A steady 19 points out, the only blemish a blank on the third and then he finished his magical round with a spectacular 23 points on the back nine for a hugely popular victory. Jack went on to thank Andy for the beautiful prize and also commended the green staff for making it so easy for him to have such a good score. Jimmy Mohan (12) couldn’t contain his delight in finishing second with a back-to-back 41 points (having had the same score in the Thursday Open) Billy Henderson (8) full of confidence after a lesson in positive thinking from his team mates in the captain’s scramble the previous evening had a great 41 points to take third place just losing out to Jimmy on the count back. The evergreen Fred Young (7) was the epitome of consistency taking fourth place also on a tiebreak with 40 points. Category prizes went to (gross) Lester Moore (3) 37;cat, 6-12, Aubrey Taylor (8) 40 pts; cat13-17, Martin McCormick (14) 39 points, cat 18-28 James Harrigan (18) 40 pts. Ron Grieve (16) and Bob Coull (21) won the nines on 24 points each. The student prize was won by James Kelly (6) on 40 points and the veteran’s prize went to Ken McClintock (19) on 38 points. Best of the non-qualifiers was Brian Durnin with a commendable 41 points on a tiebreak. (Incidentally Jack had a best of the day score on another captain’s day some years back but on that occasion he was a non qualifier despite numerous efforts to become a qualifier but now he has the real thing)
